Grayling is located in the north-central part of the Lower Peninsula, accessed by the main traffic arteries of I-75 and US-27 from the North and South and by M-72 from the East and West. Grayling is the county seat of Crawford County which contains 559 square miles of which most of it is in the AuSable State and Huron Manistee National Forests. The economy is primarily dependent on the service industry and retail trade. With the abundance of national and state forests and parklands, recreational activities abound and the area is a sanctuary for those who seek the great outdoors. The AuSable River is a legendary trout fishery that winds through Grayling and runs east to Lake Huron and is the site of the world’s longest canoe marathon. The Manistee River runs parallel to the AuSable in the opposite direction-west out to Lake Michigan. Grayling is a hotbed of fly-fishing and angling on the edge of some world class streams, rivers, and lakes. Nearby Camp Grayling is the nation’s largest National Guard training site and the largest military installation east of the Mississippi River.
